Medical Education
Three level Educational Program on US:
Educational courses vary in structure
and duration according to course level and topic. Most courses are based
on lectures, seminars with case review sessions and practical training
with US instruments. Doctors who attend the short-term courses have access
to the Center’s videolibrary from the Jefferson Ultrasound Institute which
contains more than 150 hours of lectures including translated to native
language. The Center also has a library of US books and teaching file of
interesting cases for self-education.
First
level
Basic US course for medical
students of third year of education
This course is intended for medical students
of the 3rd year of studies. It is a part of the program on radiology for
medical students.
The course consists of 6 hours of lectures
and 4 hours of practical training and covers the following topics:
-
Physical principles of Ultrasound
-
Imaging instruments: A, B, M-mode, pulsed, duplex
and Color Doppler
-
Production of Ultrasound and its interaction with
human tissue
-
Principles of image interpretation of assessed organs
-
Capabilities and limitations of Ultrasound in assessment
of examined organs and systems
After this course the students should
be able to:
-
Discribe the production of acustic waves and the
pulse-echo technics and relationship between the Doppler effect and blood
flow velocity measurements
-
Understand the indications for ultrasound examination
of different organs and basic safety consideration
-
List the key elements of a basic ultrasound examination
-
Identify normal anatomic structures from ultrasound
images and correlate them to anatomic cross-sectional planes of the body
-
Recognize the main US patterns of pathologic conditions
of the organs (like diffuse vs focal, solid vs complex vs cystic lesion,
US signs of simple cyst, stones, polyps, hydronephrosis, tumors)
Second
level
Elective US course for
graduating students
This course is designed for graduating students
who consider radiology as a future profession. Course duration is 36 hours,
including lectures, seminars with cases review, observations of US examinations
in different hospitals and practical training with US instruments.
Lecture topics include:
-
Physical principles and instrumentation
-
Acoustic patterns of human soft tissue
-
Principles of Doppler Ultrasound: conventional and
colour
-
How to optimize Ultrasound images
-
Ultrasonography of Normal and Abnormal Hepatobiliary
System
-
Ultrasonography of Normal and Abnormal Pancreas
-
Ultrasonography of Normal and Abnormal Urinary System
-
Ultrasound Assessment of «small parts»
-
Ultrasonography in Gynecology and Obstetrics
Practical Training:
-
Hands-On training
-
Observation of US examinations at the University
hospitals
After completion this course the students
should be able to:
-
Appreciate the relationship between acoustic physics,
hemodynamics and the sonographic representation of tissue and blood flow
-
Understand and discuss the capabilities and limitations
of gray-scale and Doppler ultrasound evaluation of various organ’s pathology.
-
Recognize the acoustic representation of normal anatomy
of the abdomen, urinary tract, male and female pelvis, fetus, thyroid and
scrotum
-
Identify pathologies of the abdomen, urinary tract,
male and female pelvis, thyroid and scrotum from ultrasound images.
-
Perform basic scanning of the abdomen, male and female
pelvis (transabdominal approach), thyroid gland.
Third
level
Short term US courses
for GP & Sonologists on:
-
US in gynecology;
-
US of thyroid gland disease;
-
Echocardiography in pediatric practice;
-
Doppler Ultrasound in hepatology;
-
US anatomy of human internal organs.
Video self-education course is also available.
Monthly seminars on various topics of clinical
application of US for physicians of Kyiv's
region.
